An unconference is a facilitated, participant-driven conference. During the day, people are free to present, share and participate in a range of activities - sharing tips, stories and examples of using technology to enhance, augment and facilitate more effective learning and teaching. The agenda for the day is organised largely by the attendees and will be faciliated by the Learning and Teaching Centre.
As of 17th September, we have 40 people signed up from external educational spaces to join us on campus!
Please Register to Attend!
In order to attend you must register by 24th September for the on campus event, in order for us to comply with a range of practical issues and ensure everyone has a great day. The conference will be split between physical space and virtual space through the islands of Jokaydia, home to the Macquarie Second Life campus. You only need to do this if you are intending to come on campus. Register here online
If you can't attend or want to start early ... we've posted some starter questions ... and would love you to comment.

About the unconference day.
The unconference is for educators, academics, researchers, policy makers, curriculum designers,  IT industry,  digital media developers, students and anyone interested in diverse views and approaches to learning and teaching to build and strengthen their personal learning networks through shared interests. The day seeks to offer a broad range of activities driven by the community and participants. It is a BYOL event (bring your own laptop).
Topics could include discussions around:
-
How is learning in the 21st Century shaping up?
-
What does it mean for our learning spaces?
-
What toolsets and pedagogical approaches successfull engage students?
-
How will 21st century learning impact community, workplaces and education?
.... [But] the unconference day is shaped and driven by the attendees using only broad topics of facilitation.
Where does the day start?
The event begins with a brief welcome session to explain the day; followed by a number of activities. The venue provides a laptop, projector and audio for presentations. There are power outlets in the venue; but a bringing a powerboard will win you friends.
Keynote Session in Second Life (streamed to the University campus)
We are please to have a keynote discussion by Teachers Without Borders, presented by Dr Konrad Glogowski (http://www.teachandlearn.ca) at 1pm AEST. This will be relayed from Second Life into one of the presentation venues.
Three Ways to Participate!
We can support and facilitate sessions which are presented via Second Life, Adobe Connect and face to face - if you wish to use another technology - that's fine, but you will need to prepare resources and instructions etc., to ensure that participants are able to connect to your session.
- Virtual Word - Second Life: If you are going to present in Second Life, please have any resources and slides prepared by the 21st September so that they can be uploaded for you. Presentations in Second Life will be streamed into U@MQ and facilitated for you. Note: Absolute beginners can present in Second Life. The MQ guide to getting online is here and several 'how to present in Second Life' sessions are planned prior to the big day - stay tuned for further details.
- Online Classroom - Skype/GTalk/Twitcam/Adobe Connect: If you are going to present using the above (type) services; please provide URLS and requirements for backchannel etc.,
- Real World - Face to Face: If you wish to present live and require special software or other rooming requirements, please ensure you list these before the 21st September. Where possible we will also broadcast the audio from your session into the Unconference venue in Second Life so virtual attendees can also participate.
Facilitated/Presented discussions
Please use the table below to provide basic summary information. If you want to put in more details of your proposal; feel free to make a new page and link to it. These things can be discussion circles, presentations, demonstrations etc., they can be as short as a few minutes or run longer. Whatever you feel comfortable with sharing.
A draft schedule will be completed on the 24th of September - so don't worry about adding the time yet.

What to bring
Ideas, enthusiasm and a friend. We'd love it if you brought a newcomer to the event and help them build a learning network. This is a FREE event, but that is not to say it is a leech event - so please respect other people's view, work and resources.
***STOP THE BUS*** - Thanks to all who registered - lunch in provided at noon with afternoon tea! - Woot.
No catering is provided though U@MQ has a wide range of food and beverage outlets which are open from 8am onwards. The event will open at 9am and continue through the day. You might want to take a picnic lunch in the parklands or use the self-service facilities provided such as tables and microwaves. The day is being held in semester break, though there may be students on campus.
Macquarie University has a rail station on campus on the Epping to Chatswood line, is accessible by bus and has on campus parking (not free and the parking people are keen as so watch where you park) - Find more info here.

Great idea, I'm looking forward to it and pondering how I can contribute as we speak. A couple of questions in the meantime:
1) Are we anticipating the bulk of participants to be local/face-to-face, or will they be beaming in from all over? In other words, to what degree should facilitators/presenters plan for an an online audience as well as F2F one?
2) Will there be facilities available for recording the sessions (audio, video or both), or is this BYORE as well (Bring Your Own Recording Equipment)?
3) Any issues with internet access and/or blocked sites?
4) Is this wiki the formal planning and discussion space? E.g. use this comment area for communicating with one another, and/or shall we nominate a tag/hashtag and pull in the feed?
Looking forward to the event - should be a lot of fun!

Beaming in from all over - working the network, so the event will be streamed and run in Second Life to allow people to create a shared reality. BOYORE is fine too; no issues with blocking; though will have to test apps such as SL/WoW over the wifi in the next few days. The wiki is a scratch pad, not precious about it all all, just play nice.

Dean, I am looking forward to how this unfolds. I am wondering about how a day like this could run in a school. Ideas?

well, it really just needs facilitation and with schools; being able to focus on their issues and agenda with a few choice 'activities' - and not all around 'tech'.
